Diagnose and Prescribe

Issue 011

After my first son, I struggled.

Postpartum anxiety. Hormonal imbalances. The kind of low-grade unwellness that doesn't show up on a panel but lives in your nervous system, your sleep, your patience, your reflection. The kind that the women around me kept telling me was just what motherhood feels like.

It wasn't. I knew it wasn't.

So I started seeking out a Chinese holistic doctor after trying multiple different holistic and traditional medicine options.

At my next OBGYN appointment, I told him what I was doing.

I expected pushback. I expected the polite Western-medicine dismissal — “I wouldn't put too much stock in that, those modalities aren't well-studied, here's a referral if you want medication.”

He did not give me that.

He looked at me and said, “I wholly support that. Unfortunately, in Western medicine, we are never taught to treat the root cause. We are taught to diagnose and prescribe.”

Diagnose and prescribe.

That was the whole sentence. That was the whole industry, in five words, said out loud by a doctor inside the system.

I have never forgotten it.

It changed how I see almost everything about how women are sold their own bodies back to them. Literally. We are sold every day that our body’s are a problem, out of our control and that solutions mainly reside with drugs and more so than ever with GLP-1’s.

Because the weight loss industry — the one you and I have both been swimming in for decades — is built on the same model. Diagnose. Prescribe. Diagnose. Prescribe. It’s so exhausting.

You walked in with extra weight? Here's a meal plan. You walked in tired and inflamed? Here's a shake. You suffer with a diet yo-yo cycle? Here's an injection. You walked in convinced something deeper is going on? Here's a watch. Here's an app. Here's a macro target. Here's a 75-day challenge. Here's the next book.

All band-aids. All surface. All treating the symptom.

None of them — none of them — ever asked you the actual root-cause question.

What is out of balance in your life that your body is faithfully reflecting back to you?

That is the Eastern question. That is the question Western medicine was not built to ask, and the diet industry was built to ignore.

The root cause of your weight struggle is not in your body.

Your body is the scoreboard. It is the place where the actual root has been quietly keeping its tally — for fifteen, twenty, thirty years.

The root is upstream of every protocol you have ever tried.

It is the agreement.

The one you made with yourself a long time ago — at twenty-three, twenty-eight, thirty-two — that you would come second. To your partner. To your children. To your career. To the friend in crisis. To the parent who needed something. To the boss who needed something else.

And the body — your body, which has been listening to you this entire time — has been holding the receipts.

The weight is not the problem. The weight is the record of a problem you have been having with yourself for two decades.

That is the root. There is no protocol for it. There is only an answer to a question most women have never been brave enough to ask.

Most diets are temporary peace treaties with a body you have been at war with.

The body knows. She always knows. So she puts the weight back on. Not as a punishment. As a reminder. The agreement is still standing.

This is not a willpower issue. This is not a metabolism issue. This is not a hormonal issue.

This is a fidelity issue. To yourself.

This is the work of The SLIM Identity.

The SLIM Identity is the work of treating the root cause — quietly, with intention, in the way your body has been asking you to for a long time — so that you can build your life and your dreams beyond the body.

Because the body was never the destination. The body is the baseline. The body is the core strength of everything else you are trying to build. The brand. The marriage. The chapter. The income. The impact. The mornings. The presence.

That is what this gets to feel like. That is what most women have never been told it could feel like.

When you feel good, you do good. When you do good, you create good.

The body is the doorway. Not the room.
